British shows, part I

20 January 2007 168 views No Comment

After hearing about there’s this new British Sci-fi show that can be described a cross between X-files, Buffy and Angel. I can’t help but take notice, and then there’s news about how it has huge rating in UK and the fact that it is not showed in America yet just make me want to watch even more. Soon afterward I found a copy and start watching the first episode and I was hooked.

The show is called Torchwood, it’s a spin-off of Doctor Who, which I kind of heard of before but never really pay attention. The show is about this special organization that investigate alien and all supernatural activities. It’s easier to fake ancient artifact than advanced technology, just like many other sci-fi shows, there are instants some of the props just come across cheesy and you started to question about the budget of the show, (you can do the math, British shows each season are 13 episodes only and serve much lesser population than American shows) but most of the time it did a good job to make things believable.

The main attraction of the show for me is the charming lead Captain Jack Harkness. He’s good looking and he’s from the future 51st century where orientation doesn’t matter, so you can say he’s bi. (so are every other characters on the show!) That make it a very interesting dynamic between the members of this special organization. The show deals with aliens, ghost, fairy tales, and all kind of things. Good thing about the show is the lack of conspiracies or cover up that dominated X-files (I found that kind of stuff super boring!) It’s not the best but still a very entertaining show. Maybe it will air here in the Sci-fi channel one day.

P.S. The actor who played Captain Jack is John Barrowman, who happened to be gay. Here’s hot off the press news report about his civil union with longtime boyfriend. Look at the pictures! all I can say is aww! they look so sweet together!
