Mid-season TV review

17 January 2007 191 views No Comment

The TV shows are starting new episodes after a long holiday break, so it’s time for a sum up of what shows I am suddenly into, which shows fallen out of favor, which show I am eagerly anticipating.

Scrubs: This season honestly it’s not their best, It seems not able to get back to itself after a pretty good season last year. The first few episodes are not as funny as before. It seems to get better last week with My Friend With Money and hopefully will get a lot better with this week’s Musical episode. I think the problem is that the issues the show are dealing with this season is too serious: Carla’s depression, Kim’s pregnancy. I admire the show to deal with real issues, but that leaves little room to be silly! There’s considerable less fantasy sequences and that just break the formula of what make Scrubs works! Anyhow, the fantasy sequences are back with major silliness last episode and I love the whole Elliot being in private practice storyline, that gives a whole new interaction between her and the rest of the gang.

Lost: I am finally all caught up with the episodes. Season 2 was better than I expected after all these people saying Lost has lost it. The 6 episodes of Season 3 are just okay, separating the 3 leads from the group and killing 3 cast members/exile 2 other members takes a toll on the show. Not to mention the 2 new cast members are just not that lovable. But my only question to is to myself though, do I start watching the show again weekly or should I wait til the end and watch all the episodes in one sitting?

Brothers & Sisters: I started from just watching Calista, to now watching the “whole” show. It’s just getting better now that Rob Lowe is officially staying for the rest of the season. Watching him and Calista remind me of Robert Downey Jr. and Calista. Same kind of instant chemistry! I hope he’s gonna be an official cast member for the rest of the series as well instead of just this season. As for Kevin’s storyline with the straight guy, my opinion is, it’s not gonna end well! just drop it and bring back Scotty!

How I Met Your Mother: Ted and Robin are a great couple! In other shows such as Friends or Scrubs, the main couple usually get broken up immediately after they are together – because it’s not fun anymore if the audience has no one to root for. But here in HIMYM, it’s been half a season and they are still together. I guess the different is that we know from the first episode that Ted and Robin will not be together in the end, and put them together would keep the audience guessing. And Barney is legendary, that’s all I have to say.

Heroes: The best of all the new show. I can’t wait to see what happen next! The single mom’s split personality still bugs me though, that’s definitely not a superpower!!

Ugly Betty: More Henry and Betty! More Henry and Betty! But first thing’s first: now that Daniel’s MIA, will Betty get her job back? And can they just reveal that masked woman! Her scenes are boring!

30 Rock: To be honest, the first few episodes are just not funny at all! But then it got better. And Alec Baldwin just keep on getting funnier and funnier. And everyone around him have to keep up and resulting in a show that is improving steadily. Except Tracy Morgan – who’s just too weird to be in any show – I did love his craziness back in SNL, but somehow in a show it just doesn’t work too well.

Office: Here’s another show that got me by surprise. I didn’t like the show in the beginning, but Steve Carell’s character is so stupid that I can’t help but want to see what else can he do to make a fool of himself.

What About Brian: Sorry, i can’t stand this show anymore.
The Class: I gave it a chance, but it just isn’t working out.

I also got into two British series, which I will talk about in another time.
