I am feeling European~
Today I am feeling European~ I got something from Germany, well, via Rome~ It’s always nice to get the little silly things from him, it’s sweet. Of course that’s not the only thing that made me feel European~I saw the movie Paris, je t’aime, a French film that is actually 18 short films stitch together. Each one is about 5 minutes long, each by a different director from around the world, and of course acted by actors around the world. The only connection between them is that they all happened in Paris and the films all dealing with love. The talents behind the film is truly impressive. Directors and writers included well-known names like Gus Van Sant, Wes Craven, Joel and Ethan Coen, Alexander Payne, Christopher Doyle, Alfonso Cuarón, and many others. As for the actors, they are as diverse as the directors and writers. You get Maggie Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman, Elijah Wood, Gaspard Ulliel, Emily Mortimer, Miranda Richardson, Willem Dafoe, Steve Buscemi, Nick Nolte, Bob Hoskins and many many others.
What about the film itself? was it good? surprisingly it is. Considering each shorts are very different in style, not to mention there is so many of them. It is not easy to present them all together with a nice flow. It is not without problem – the main problem I have with the film is that the shorts are too short! 5 mins! many of them I was left wondering what happened next with those people! I want to know more! If they could have cut the number of shorts in half and let’s say give each one 10-15 mins instead, it would be much better~ cos now I am left wondering if the cute and buff Gaspard Ulliel ever meet up with the American boy again, or what the hell happened with that weird salesman and the Asian Beauty Salon (It took me by surprise to hear Faye Wong’s song!), or the mime family! (yeah, there’s mime! and if you must know, ghost and vampire too!)
It’s a good film, on pair with the other awesome French films that I love~ It just makes you want to see Paris yourself! (maybe not Quartier de la Madeleine! you’ll know why if you watch the film!) Highly recommended~ too bad it hasn’t release in America yet~
