Audio-visual in the Web 2.0 era Part I

11 May 2007 231 views No Comment

Web 2.0 certainly is the buzz word anywhere nowadays, every single session in the Librarian’s conference I went to last month is about a form of Web 2.0. Anyone who keeps a blog or have an account in myspace or share a bookmark in delicious is a part of the Web 2.0. Notice blog, social-networking and social-bookmarking are all somewhat text-based. Image-wise, Flickr is pretty much established as the go-to place of image. Now what about audio-visual media? Long troubled by copyright issues, they are still trying to find a way to work. Youtube’s fate rest on if Google can make a deal with the Media companies. Most recently even the awesome online radio/recommendation service Pandora is affected by licensing and royalty issues and need to close down their operations outside of America. (evil RIAA is at it again this time trying to kill all online radio and streaming and webcasting music.) So does that mean Audio-visual media of Web 2.0 is DOA? nah, there’s always survivor or new-born who can stand on the shoulders of it’s predecessors.

By now you are probably wondering what direction is this post going being all serious and stuff. Well, for starters, I want to talk about Last.fm again. I know I talked about it quite a lot back then, plus keep on displaying their charts and quilts everywhere on this blog. It’s just that doesn’t seems like the recent licensing and royalty issues doesn’t affect them as much and they might be a survivor in the Web 2.0 music scene. They are evolving and improving fast to be even better than just charts that keep track of what i listened. They already have the social-networking thing figure out and the music function is getting better and better. Just look at their most recent update: new Web 2.0 style widget that you can listen to instead of just plain old text charts. Widgets for my playlist and radio as well. I always wanted to showcase my music beyond just the title and artist, i want people to be able to listen right here right now. Their previous radio is big and horizontal – which is a problem if I want to put it in my blog. Before I knew it now the problem is solved! The widgets are looking sweet too. You will definitely see them in my blog in the future.

Next up will be my thoughts on Joost, an internet TV start up that my friend kindly invited me for the beta software. (Thanks V)
