Blog Project Production Diary I

17 May 2007 198 views No Comment

You know how some films have production diaries where they keep a record of production and show it either through their website to give fans a sneak peek or later on in dvd as bonus extras? Some even have pre-production diaries documenting concept arts, scouting films locations, scripts, etc. Well, I like the concept and thinking why not have a similar approach to my current web project? I am really into this project right now and spent hours on it everyday. It’s all I can think of anyway, so why not have a more systematic approach to document it? It’s obvious that it’s not video footage like the ones on some real production diaries, but it will be more of documenting some concept, some work behind the design of the project. Of course I am not going to reveal too much, but just a bit here and there. I am going to keep this ongoing series light and not technical at all. So ready? set and action!

First day of the project! Well when I said first day, I mean first day of actual working on the new design of the blog, not counting how i prepare for it by thinking about the concept and direction, or fixing up the existing codes or add new features in the existing blog in anticipation of the new look. My current blog look is very how do you describe it? bright and sunny? With a blue sky and white background, even though the skyline was in the shade, but the overall look is still so clean and wholesome. I want to do something totally different, very gritty very dark in tone. So where to start? For a blog, the background and the head banner pretty much establish the overall feel. Logically that’s where I should started.

Now when I said a darker tone I don’t mean just change the background to black and that’s about it. I want something more. My decision is to use an image as a background. Nope, not a small pattern that repeat throughout the page to become a background. A real image, large and big covers the length of the blog. I realize it’s gonna be difficult and slow-loading if someone has a slow connection, but nowadays boardband is mainstream, I can’t design for the lowest common denominator and let them hold me back. I need an authethic background, I could just find it somewhere and use it as my own, or I could design it myself. I choose the latter. I still need an image to work with though, something for me to transform and create my vision. After a long search, I settled on an image of the moon. Yes you heard it right! the moon! I can tell you that the final product looks nothing like the moon, you will not have guess it’s the moon unless I told you so. I am not gonna show you the final image yet, you’ll get the chance to see it once the project comes to a completion. But expect me to say “I used the moon to make THAT!” a lot! ha!

BTW, the acronym of the title of this series is B.P.P.D. It doesn’t spell like a word or anything, but just for the shapes of the letter, I would have to say “Neato!!” :)
