Shrek the Third

22 May 2007 879 views 2 Comments

King Harold is dying and someone else needed to success the throne of Far Far Away. Shrek do not want the job and went on to search for a descendant of the royal bloodline. Right before his journey Fiona informed him that she is pregnancy. The pending fatherhood does not make the journey any easier. While Shrek is away, Prince Charming orchestrated a rebellion. Can Shrek and his companions find the heir to the throne and return home in time to save the day?

Shrek is probably the closest to the idea of animations for grown-up in America. Unlike the Japanese counterpart where they can tackle any serious subjects at will, be it about war and violence, environment, relationships, sports, fantasy, history, literature, etc. Animations in America is still all about cute animals and essentially the medium is for kids only. Shrek is very different in that aspect because aside from the cute animals and the fairy tale setting (it’s twisted anyway), main theme is at least very grown up, it’s all about human relations, from the first movie about finding the right person who accept who you are, to the second movie getting along with your in-laws, meet your parents situation, to this newest installment about pending parenthood. It really set itself apart from other animations. In addition, there’s always tons of inside jokes and visual gags for grown up. Maybe that’s the reason why the series is doing a lot better in box office than any other animations.

Anyway, let’s get back to the third movie! It’s another solid effort for the series, almost all the characters returned (well, except fairy god mother, I miss that evil witch~ hehe) But unlike last time when fairy god mother and Puss in Boots steal the show, this time there isn’t any character that stands out. My favorite Gingerbread man and Pinocchio retain a small role, but they are still funny as hell! I love Gingie’s memory montage! :) The princesses are quite awesome, not only on screen but off screen as well because all of them are voiced by the funniest women in comedy, Amy Sedaris of the Strangers with Candy fame, the SNL gals Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Cheri Oteri. It almost makes me wonder where is Molly Shannon! Everyone knows that Artie is Justin Timberlake, but there’s another cute guy lending a voice this time too, he’s John Krasinski from the Office. (BTW even Regis is in it too!)

Overall it’s satisfying, we got all the jokes about present seeing from the point of view of that twisted fairyland, our beloved characters are back (Puss with his sad eyes!) and who doesn’t want to see Snow White become a fighting singing machine? My only concern is that the novelty of making fun of fairy tale is all gone and the endless sequels in sight could get tiring real fast.

Yes, when that Led Zeppelin started up and Snow White got all fierce… classic moment.

I had no idea that was Josh Krasinski. He’s super sexy.

He is, that’s why he has another movie coming up with Mandy Moore and Robin Williams. I might drag you to see it.
