The leaving of a president

18 May 2007 261 views One Comment

Nope, not THAT President. I am referring to the president of the college where I work. She is resigning and will move on to another job in another state. Normally I don’t talk about work because employers are increasing keeping track of blogs online, but on this occasion (and the fact that I am not bad mouthing anyone), I can make an exception.

College presidents who understand the need of libraries in student’s life is critical to academic librarians. Without the understanding and the appreciation of the libraries by the president or in general the administration, libraries always end up on a chopping block whenever money is short. How often have you hear budget cut or lay off in a library? nearly all the time! But not here! our budget is generous, we didn’t have any budget cut or anything like that through out the years. We keep on expanding. As you can see It is incredibly fortunate that this particular president of ours is a frequent library user that appreciate the value of libraries. Numerous times I helped her to locate articles she needed. I have seen her using the library a place for her to get close and personal with students, where she can chat with them informally to get a feeling of what’s going on with the students. She even did one of those ALA “Read” poster to promote literature! Not to mention we shared the same floor, on this floor there’s only the president’s office and the library, so we are sort of neighbors! I still remember back at my old job in that big college campus. I’ve never seen the president there and don’t even know what he or she looks like, the library budget got cut every year, even though it doesn’t really affect my position there, but as a whole I felt disrespected and disconcerting. It is so much different here and I really hope it’s not going to change just because a change of the presidency.

I can only hope the next president will be as good to the library as the current one. As for the current president, she will be greatly missed and I wish her best of luck!
