Top 5 Romantic films

10 May 2007 200 views 2 Comments

After I read 冬冬 wrote about her top 5 romantic movies, I am gonna write about my top 5. Making list is fun, even though you always think of something else that should totally be on the list a day later. Anyway, here’s my top 5 romantic films:

1) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: Here is a couple that hated each other so much that they have to erase each other from their memories, and yet in the end, after they find out what happened before their memories were gone, after they find out how awful they were to each other and the real possibility that are just not meant for each other and might break up again, they still want to give each other another chance, that is something.

2) A Very Long Engagement: Mathilde’s unbelievable journey to look for her long lost fiance. Against all odd, her incredible optimism and her rock-solid faith finally bring her to him. The flashbacks of when they were kids Manech brought Mathilde up to the lighthouse was romantic as hell even if they were just kids.

3) Amelie: yeah i know, another French film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and starring Audrey Tautou, but how can my favorite film of all time not be on the list? In this film even though we spent most of the time with Amelie, but I think the most romantic thing about this film is how these two silly person that have overactive imagination found their way to each other. Nino and Amelie are just meant to be.

4) A Lot Like Love: On and off, on and off, Oliver and Emily, I mean Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet had a very good chemistry in this film. Fate separate them over and over again during the film but yet they find their way back to each other. I was pleasantly surprise by this movie.

5) Notting Hill: the most underrated Juliet Roberts movie. It wasn’t as funny as her most famous movies like Pretty Woman or My Best Friend’s Wedding, but I think this one is a lot more romantic than those two. She and Hugh Grant made a good match. It’s a larger than life story about a celebrity fell in love with a bookstore keeper! but somehow it is believable. Elvis Costello’s song She definitely bring up the romantic level up a notch!

Cliche mentions: Titantic, Moulin Rouge
Honorary mentions: Love Actually, What Dreams May Come
Animations: Pocahontas, Little Mermaid
Gay romance: Brokeback Mountain, Happy Together

I’m with you all the way here. Fab movies all.

Except Notting Hill, I’ve never actually seen that, but I’m putting it on my Netflix queue right now because of your recommendation.
