Blink

I don’t think anyone that I know watches Doctor Who, but this week’s episode “Blink” was definitely the creepiest and one of the best episode I’ve seen for the past 3 seasons! If there’s anyone one episode I would recommended, this would be the one! It’s one of those episode where the main character was almost not in the show at all, similar to that Zeppo episode of Buffy where you see very little of Buffy or those His Story or Her Story episodes of Scrubs where you see very little JD. Same thing here, this episode feature very little of the Doctor or Martha. The main character is someone that we never met before. An ordinary person who has to figure out how to save herself from the villain with clues left by the Doctor.

I think there are two creep factor that make this episode the scariest – obviously one of them would be the villain. Now a typical Doctor Who villain is never really scary. They are kinda like the monsters in Buffy. Did any of them scares you? very few i bet. But the most scary one is the one that rooted in something ordinary, something that we would come in contact with in real life or seen them around. It’s like in the scariest episode of Buffy – Hush, if those “Gentlemen” did not dress in a regular tux like people, I don’t think it’s as scary as it would be. Now back to Doctor Who, the villain is something elegance and nice, people would regularly admire and appreciate its beauty. Another creep factor is that inanimate object as villain is always scarier, because I guess you can’t see how they move. But the biggest creep factor in this episode is because of the game has change! In a normal Doctor Who episode, the Doctor would always save the day, but here because the Doctor is almost non-existence (he’s only in the DVD’s Easter Egg hidden feature – another concept that I love!!), everything is rely on this girl that we never met before, so all bets are off, there’s no safety net!

The girl Sally in this episode is so likable that I want her to be a regular in the series even after one ep! She has that charisma similar to Captain Jack Harkness, just seen them once and you would want more! Now Captain Jack get his own spin off immediately afterward, I would surely hope there’s a future for Sally~ (although she’s much more “ordinary” in terms of abilities-wise)

I like this episode so much that I started to look up some more background information, turns out that the writer of this ep also wrote 3 other episodes in the previous seasons that I think were the best – The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances and The Girl in the Fireplace. Anyway, Doctor Who is kicking in the high gear with 3 episodes left in the season, and with Captain Jack’s return in the next episode, things are going to be very interesting!
