Mainstream-O-Meter

Last.fm’s chart is fun, but people create some even more intriguing stuff with the data. Here’s one that measures the mainstream-ness of your music taste. Of course the measurement is based on Last.fm, so you will expect the younger hipper music is more “mainstream”, and English songs are predominated. For me the more obscure my taste is the better because I want to be unique and be the first to discover awesome music that no one else heard of yet, and then 1 years later everyone listen to it and then I move on to the next undiscovered act. So anyway, overall I am about 11% mainstream thanks to my Chinese songs in which each has less than 2000 people listening – which brings me to my point – if you listen to Chinese music you should join Last.fm so that it would reflects the real world a little bit better~ (you know, instead of 0.28% of people listening to Miriam Yeung, which is silly) But let’s exclude Chinese music from the equation for a minute, my mainstream-ness is still awesomely low. From the top 30 the most mainstream singer I listen to is Keane at 45%, most singers are in the teens and 20s and 30s. I am pretty satisfied with the conclusion that I listen to cool music that not a lot of people know about. What about you? If you are with Last.fm, go ahead play it and tell me your number~
