New "Font"iers – Apple vs. Microsoft

17 June 2007 378 views No Comment

Safari on Windows open up an unexpected war on the difference between how Apple and Microsoft display font on screen. I heard lots of people were saying Safari’s font is blurry and they prefer the Microsoft way. This article explains clearly about the difference between the two companies – once again it come down to philosophy and culture of them. Apple chooses to preserve a font’s artistic integrity and style due to their ties with desktop publishing and graphic design, while Microsoft chooses readability on screen to enable accessibility to the mass. This quote captures the idea perfectly:

Typically, Apple chose the stylish route, putting art above practicality, because Steve Jobs has taste, while Microsoft chose the comfortable route, the measurably pragmatic way of doing things that completely lacks in panache. To put it another way, if Apple was Target, Microsoft would be Wal-Mart.

There’s no right or wrong or which one is better, it’s just a preference. If you are used to the Microsoft way, you will think the Apple’s way of displaying font is blurry, if you are used to Apple’s way, then you will think Microsoft’s way is uglier.
