Landmarks
Today some of the buildings that I am familiar with were official declared as landmarks. Hopefully with a landmark status, these buildings can escape the current trend of “destroying history and build a condo on top of it!”
First up is the one that I stare at every day, the one that is a block away from my window – Eberhard Faber Pencil Factory in Greenpoint. I just love the giant pencils at the exterior of the building. With the destruction of many historical factory buildings in Williamsburg and Greenpoint, I was afraid that even Pencil Factory can not last long, so it’s a relief to know that it is now a landmark.
Then we have Webster Hall, the giant music venue in East Village that pretty much everyone i know heard of or have been there. It might not look like much outside, and probably even inside since it’s dark all the time. But if you really take a look at the decor of the wall and ceiling, you know the place was significant at some of of its life.

Then we have the department store Lord & Taylor on 5th Ave close to where I work! It is a fantastically elegant building inside and out. It’s particularly nice looking during the holidays. In my opinion it has more soul than Macy’s flagship store on 34th Street.
The Landmark Preservation Commission actually landmarked many other buildings today, but these 3 are the ones that are close to my heart and worth mentioning.
