Cycles

29 August 2008 283 views No Comment

My likes and dislikes come in cycles. There are periods of obsession and then usually follows by intense dislike, fall out of favorite, then out of nowhere come back to top the chart of all my favorites. For example, in food, eel was one time my favorite that I have to eat it every single day. Then all of the sudden I stop liking them so much that I refuse to eat it. But now it’s back on the menu. Same thing with the Cantonese dim sum “Sticky Rice Chicken wrapped in Lotus Leaves.” Love it, hate it, and then love it again.

Another bigger example is the habit of reading. I read tons of books back in high school, then during college and grad school, most of my reading becomes just plain studying and no leisure reading can squeezed in. And slowly reading was replaced by the internet. It’s not until 2003 and onward with the help of Harry Potter and a certain friend of mine who carries two books with him all time that I was able to get back on the horse and read consistently again.

Yet another example is the main reason for this post – gaming. I am a picky gamer. I would give most games a try, but the ones that I truly like and go back to again and again is far in between. Over the years, the time I spent on gaming is less than a few hours within two or few months! There is just not enough time in a day to fit gaming into my daily schedule with all the feeds online, reading, music, tv shows and movies that I am already committed to. But lately, gaming is making a comeback! First on the iPhone with all the fun cutesy games, from Dizzy Bee to Toy Bot to Enigmo, then there’s a GRAND strategy game (I emphasized grand b/c it is grand!) called Europa Universalis III. I know this game came out in 2007, in fact it’s so old that I haven’t seen it on the shelf in any retailer, Mac or PC. Still, it’s so addictive that I wouldn’t mind at all, plus the lifespan in the genre of strategy games can last for years given its replayable nature. I am definitely devoting way more time on gaming than I should, I think I played 20+ hours over the weekend, til 4 in the morning~ and with next week’s release of Spore on Mac and on iPhone, it’s safe to say that this cycle of “liking” games is gonna go on for a while.
