aghast
As a librarian (can I still call myself that even if i don’t work as a librarian anymore?), this piece of news from Times magazine is disturbing:
Stein says that as mayor, Sarah Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. “She asked the library how she could go about banning books,” he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. “The librarian was aghast.” That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn’t be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving “full support” to the mayor.
I don’t think it’s written anywhere in the job description that a mayor has the power to determine which book the public is allow to see in the library, not to mention threaten to fire someone because she doesn’t share her viewpoint!? When it come to safeguarding the public’s right to access information, we librarians are in the frontline. Hopefully we are the only one that recognize the horror that will be if we let the Republicans to win this election.
BTW, it’s not even the worst thing in this article abour Palin, the whole read is like a horror movie! seriously where the hack did Grandpa McCain dig this lipstick pit bull up??
(I am using Tina Fey’s picture here because I really can’t stand the real Sarah Palin!)
