Being Political

13 October 2008 306 views No Comment

I wasn’t much of a political person, I have never have any particular strong feeling of getting involved.  Surely I go to vote every four years, but whatever result that come back, it never really gets to me.  Part of it is my personality as well, I hate conflicts and I hate to take sides.  I am way comfortable being in the middle or being not involved.  However this election is way different for me.  Everyday I am on Google News reading all about the election, what are the odds and such. I am also generally scared of the possibility of a Republican win and what would that mean to the world.  And when Sarah Palin come onto the scene, I never felt such an hatred and annoyance toward a public figure so so much! She annoyed the hell out of me!

I figure part of the reason that I am feeling a lot stronger about politic this year is because of my new job.  Working for the government, in a position where I have to be aware of what’s going on, it really shaped my perception.  (Not to mention actually met a gay republican in NY! the most arrogant annoying person I ever seen!)  Another big part is because the difference each campaign has toward my interests in urban transportation, urban planning, technology and boardband policy~ that’s of course, on top of many other economic and social issues that concerns everyone including me.  Another reason is just plain simple – that I am older and have a lot more opinions on everything than 4 years ago! (and of course i haven’t mention the obvious – how this administration ruin the world in the last 8 years~)

Well, so what is this all about? since I am not volunteering for anything (my job prohibit any activity in support of both candidates, I have to maintain my neutrality~), I can’t do anything in person, but I figure I can do something in the web space by just pointing out some interesting sites and apps that in support of Obama or simply just showing you what are the odds that he will win the election.  First up, there’s a cool site called “Design for Obama“, it’s a site that gather the talents of graphic designers and show their support of Obama.  The cool thing is that the graphics are very nicely done.  Politics can be artsy too~~

Of course I have to talk about the official Obama iPhone app as well! it’s a mix of news and what is his stand on all the issues, with pictures and media and not to mention some get-the-words-out functions~ It’s no wonder Obama is big on our generation – he and his campaign knows technology and know how to utilize it, unlike McCain who don’t even know how to use a computer~

The last site is a poll analysis site called FiveThirtyEight.  It was mentioned on the Daily Show and I go ahead and visited the site.  It shows how Obama will win by doing all the mathematic of the polls! Very interesting stuff!
