No God Bus

I was reading about this piece of news about Atheists plan an ad campaign on the side of London buses.  The ad has the slogan “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.”  There are two things that stand out on this that is very interesting to me.  First the reactions of the religious leaders in Britain were not hostile or anger or anything, but generally welcome the ad because they believe it will make people thinking and engaged them into questioning the meaning of life.  The article cited comments from the Methodist Church, the Muslim Council and they are all very gentle and positive about it.  Even the most negative tone of them all, from the religious think tank Theos – they actually donated money to the ad campaign on the bases that the ad will have the opposite effect and would make people attracted to religion!  Look how civilized the Brits are!!! And they believe thinking and questioning is good!!  Their religious leaders were actually able to discuss religion or other faith or non-faith’s viewpoints without going into a rage or threat them to burn in hell!!!  If it’s over here in America, it will never happened! The neo-conservative Christian right will crucify somebody for even discussing religion!! They can’t tolerate or respect anyone who doesn’t believe in what they believe in!

The second thing that caught my eyes was the word “probably” in the slogan.  The word was included to ensure the ad didn’t violate the transit advertising regulations, but according to Ariane Sherine, the word “probably” makes the slogan more accurate because even though there’s no scientific evidence for God’s existence, it’s also impossible to prove that God doesn’t exist.  I applaud that attitude!  That is why scientists are always at a disadvantage when it come to argument with the religious folks – they are more humble and they look at evidence, and they don’t claim something that they can’t prove.  Unlike many religious folks who blindly followed and everything is absolute and there’s no other possibilities and wouldn’t allow anyone to think about other possibilities.

Okay, I am done with my rant – i wonder how many hate comments i will get for this~

Hi Harry, great post. Thanks for the compliment about trying change things with good grace and good humour. I wish I could stick to these principals more often myself.

Just to follow up on Theos’ donation, I spotted that Theos’ PR department may not be quite as ethical as the overall body – they changed their press release as the atheist bus campaign grew. I hope I’m not out of place by dropping a link here?

Are you quite sure the neo-cons would “crucify” people with ideas they don’t like? I’ve noticed a tendency for religious sites to somewhat exaggerate – back in the UK we find we are being labelled as “militant atheists” for wanting to do a spot of advertising. We need clear thinkers like you on our side, but let’s make sure it’s silly ideas we are crucifying, not those people we rightly or wrongly attach to them.

Hey Martin, thanks for the comment~

Not sure if UK has access to some of the conservative news or radio channels here in America, but if you ever watch or listen to the comments they have here, you will be surprise. Of course, they are not actually “crucify” anyone physically, but the verbal attack would be relentless and brutal.
