Upgrade Strategy
Apple’s brand new line-up of their notebooks offer me a review of my pre-set upgrade strategy of my computers. Actually there was many factors piling up before this, but Apple’s new notebooks are the last straw to make me think about revising my upgrade strategy that I setup long ago.
My original plan was to replace my Powerbook G4 next year, while replacing my iMac in 2011 or after. But many situations factors has changed so much in the past few years that I doubt I can follow this plan any longer:
1) I no longer live far far away in Queens, the need of hanging around cafés in the city all day with my laptop is pretty much over.
2) I have a new job, I don’t need to use my laptop to do presentations and designing student handouts. Plus my new job prohibited me to bring in my laptop for security reasons.
3) My iPhone diminished the need of a laptop, it satisfied most of my online or media viewing needs on the road.
As you can see, the reasons for replacing my Powerbook are no longer valid. I have decided not to replace it. So that only leaves the iMac, but I can tell you that I also have decided not to replace my iMac with another desktop! Why? remember how crazy it was for me to bring my 24″iMac back to Apple Store? It was like the worst trip ever!! Ok, that got you confused right? What am I gonna replace it with then? I am going to replace it with a notebook with the cinema display! That’s right, a Macbook/Pro/Air with a Cinema Display! Given how powerful the new line-up is, even Air can drive a 30″ external display, the option of using a notebook with external display is a lot more attractive than ever before. I thought about that option before but the Powerbook wasn’t as powerful and can get so noisy driving an external display for a long time. It is now much more viable with the new line-up!
Now the question is which one will I get? Macbook? Pro, or Air? The lines has been blur quite a bit with many of the Pro features and power moved down to the Macbook and Air. But that would be a decision for another day~~
