Madagascar 2 Escape 2 Africa
Madagascar was one of those stories where the sidekicks are more fun to watch than the leads. Madagascar 2 Escape 2 Africa continued that tradition, although because of the change in setting and dynamic, give the leads more interesting things to do (but then again it also created even more logical problems~)
Now who doesn’t love the crazy psychotic penguins from the first movie? they are just too much fun. In the sequel, they are back and even more crazier than ever, from kidnapping the Dreamworks logo fishing kid on the moon, to stealing all the tourists’ trucks, to the Penguin Airline, they brings in non stop amusement! (especially penguin plays dead! classic!) To a lesser degree, another set of sidekicks – King of lemur and his assistant and the crazed little mouse lemur who follows the king also provides lots of laughs. My favorite is when the little mouse lemur was sabotaging the engine of the plane while it’s in the air~
The leads was given a lion king type of storyline, it was a bit better than the first one but it also carry back an old logical problem that was solved in the first film – namely – predator and the prey are best friends living side by side! In the zoo, it was fine that they were friends cos they all get fed by human. In Madagascar, Alex showed the desire to eat his friends but the crisis was solved by his own determination and the Penguin chef’s delicious sushi as their source of food. But now in mainland Africa, predators and the preys are living side by side yet again and the animals all looked to the lion as king. To me that’s just too illogical, especially there was a scene where the evil lion Makunga was holding a tiny little animal as food! I know I am putting too much thought on a film that is designed for kids and their parent’s wallet, but still, don’t you think kids would ask the same damn question too?
The surprise star of the show is actually a human character, that kung fu fighting Nana from Grand Central in the first film!! She’s back this time as she touring Africa and reunion with her favorite sand bag bad kitty! And at the same time helped the lost tourist New Yorkers to survive in the wild! She’s crazy awesome!!!
Anyway, Madagascar 2 is still an enjoyable film, it’s actually better than the first one despite that unresolved problem of how predators and preys live side by side.
