My thoughts on Twilight

23 November 2008 202 views No Comment

The movie version of Twilight isn’t perfect, but seeing what you read and the characters you loved come alive on screen outweighed any silly dialogues and laughable moments.  First of all Kristen Stewart as Bella is perfect casting.  She is just natural as Bella, her stubbornness, her subtle beauty, it’s all there.  Even all the hilarious (to me) accident-prone moments come alive.  But more importantly her narration bridged the voice of the book into the movie.

The casting of this movie is pretty fantastic cos every single characters looked extremely closed to what I envisioned from the book.  Emmett, Alice, Jasper, Carlisle, Esme, James, Victoria are all exactly what I thought they would look like.  Even side characters like classmates Mike, Jesscia or Bella’s mom are pretty much what I thought would be.  The only exceptions are Charlie who seems a bit young to be Bella’s dad, Rosalie who definitely is not the most beautiful stunning woman, not that she’s not pretty, but she just don’t live up to that description.  And last but not least Eric, who first of all I didn’t know is Asian, and he just seems to be too goofy and happy~  On the other hand, Jesscia and Mike are true to their characters being adorable and cute, they brought some fun light moments into the film.

The scenery and the tone really captured the setting of the book.  Forks truly is a natural beauty.  The long shot view from the treetop is magical.  The special effects however, is a totally different story.  Sometimes you can really tell how much budget a movie has by just looking at the screen, and this is certainly the case.  How the film demonstrated vampire’s unique sparkling skin under the sun is a joke, it seriously looks like they hired Mariah Carey as the makeup artist and just put glitters on Edward!! Another area definitely need improvement is how they showed vampire’s speed, the effect is kinda TV quality, well, like Smallville~  I guess as a big screen production, I expected a bit more than that.  Another area they could have improved was the cars, the books really goes into details about the pretty cars Cullens have, but in the movie, they really don’t stand out as the fastest and the newest and the prettiest cars! (hopefully some car sponsorship in the next movie will fix that!)

The only thing I haven’t talked about is Edward~ It’s true that Robert Pattinson looks perfect as Edward, but in terms of acting, well, I am not so sure about.  He always seems too awkward.  Many of his facial expressions just doesn’t look right at the moment, especially many of his stares.  Edward has a wild range of emotions in the book, from rage to tortured soul kinda sadness, to that cool and untouchable statue kinda look.  Pattinson has almost the same expression on all of them! But then again he is just too gorgeous for me to criticize! A look at his face my heart is already half-melted~

In sum, I did enjoy the movie~ However I just hope they have a much larger budget for the next book, cos they seriously need it~~
