Were the World Mine
If Twilight is a teenage girl’s fantasy, then Were the World Mine is a gay boy’s dream come true! Were the World Mine is an indie gay musical movie that is inspired by William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It charmed me away immediately just by the preview I saw on Apple. And I really like it a lot after seeing the actual movie. The plot is simple, a gay teen named Timothy use a love potion described in Shakespeare’s play and turn his small close-minded town gay, chaos and unexpected results ensured. He essentially played the part of Puck from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It is a tempting premise, if you have a love-potion, if you could make someone loves you, would you? I probably would, I am always more of a live in a fantasy kinda person~ :p
I usually can’t get into a traditional musical movies. A musical number here and there is fine, but when the whole movie and dialogues are all songs, I usually have a problem with it. I guess I just have problems with people suddenly singing out of nowhere. I can only accepted it if it’s rooted in fantasy or dream sequence or there’s actually a reason a.k.a. in Buffy’s singer demon makes everyone sing their heart out or in Scrubs when it’s a patient’s brain tumor. In Were the World Mine, the musical sequence are all fantasy based or in the school play, so I don’t have a problem with it at all. In addition, the music are more in the genre of pop/rock, think Spring Awakening instead of the traditional Broadway style like the Producers.
I don’t usually like gay movie as well, solely because the topics and plots are usually so not imaginative. It’s always the same old, coming out, seek acceptance, AIDS and drugs and life and death situation. It’s always too heavy. It’s never happy or light-hearted or even fun. But as you can guess, this movie is none of that depressing stuff. I mean come on, it’s a musical with elements lifted from Shakespeare’s infamous comedy! The movie has a certain charm that overcome some of the uneven cheese-like dialogues (think Twilight, but not as many~), and because the musical sequences are so dazzling, and with words come straight from Shakespeare’s play, it makes the final product better than it seems. The attractive leads and co-stars doesn’t hurt either. Even the supporting characters from the mysterious and eccentric drama teacher to the lead’s mom are all excellent.
I like the music, I like the costumes and makeup, especially Timothy’s final costume on stage with the short silver wig, that’s just hot~ I like how it touches on the issue of gay marriage without being obvious about it~ I also like how the movie showed the small moments, like how Timothy’s mom struggle to deal with her son’s sexuality, how she handles the public pressure – when she yelled back at her son saying that it’s not just his own issue, she has to come out (to the public) every day too, that was powerful. And despite the sometimes tense relations with her son, she still helped him made the wings of the fairy in the school play with her own wedding dress. And the last but not least, who doesn’t like a happy ending when the boy gets the other boy for real? J
Highly recommended, especially it’s a small movie that’s flying under the radar. Catch it if it’s showing in your city! (a big if, since even in New York City it’s release in only one theater~ hopefully it will get a decent dvd release later on~)
