Coraline

coraline_posterEver since Scott introduced me to Neil Gaiman, every time there’s a movie based on his work, I would definitely go see it.  Coraline is one of them and I have to say it’s the best so far.  Nei’s work is always dark, sometimes I wonder if him and Tim Burton are long lost brothers.  Coraline is a stop-motion picture that has a dark story.  The most famous stop-motion picture that has a dark story was coincidentally Tim Burton’s the Nightmare Before Christmas.  Comparison is inevitable and I think Coraline won in the dark department even without any creepy residents of the Halloween Town!  I was at the edge of my seat the entire time!

The story is about this teenage girl Caroline who moves to a new house called the Pink Apartment with her busy parents.  Not happy in her own world, she discovered this other world through a tiny door in her house. Caroline’s other world is amazingly beautiful with caring parents, but there is always a catch in a perfect world…

It’s simply the best stop-motion animation not only with beautiful scenery but an intriguing story that hook you right in.  The danger is always lurking in the back of your mind which keep you at the edge of your seat.  I still think the danger is still there even after the happy ending and the credit rolls! Every characters are strange and interesting.  Scott said it pretty much has everything from the book.  I’ll take his words for it until I read the book.  The movie even give me perspective about the real world and the dream world that i often dwell in.  Reality is never perfect, complain about it all the time won’t make it better, escape to the dream world doesn’t really help either.  The only way is to own it up, face it, and maybe things are not as bad as you think.
