Stimulus New York
With all the talks of stimulus money from the Federal, We have yet to hear anything that benefit New York City directly. Sure the governor unveiled how the State is going to use the money alloted to New York State, but all the projects he announced are for upstate only. Coupled that with last week’s event where the State legislative refused to pass any resolution to aid MTA – which led to MTA passed the doomsday budget which will kill off many subway and bus service most needed in addition of a fare hike. It just seems like Upstate really screw us, New Yorkers, over! Luckily we do get our share of the stimulus money as the Mayor unveiled many infrastructure projects that will directly or indirectly benefit from Federal support. The list is long and it includes everything from repairing the Brooklyn Bridge to the repairing of Coney Island Boardwalk to the ferry terminal in Staten Island. I am going to list the ones that affect me:
Rehabilitation of the Greenpoint Avenue Bridge over Newtown Creek
- my Dad drive me back to Greenpoint every time I went back home to visit them in Queens via this bridge, so I pass by it fairly often. It is a movable draw bridge that when ship passed by it will go up! It is kinda scary and indeed needed fixing~
Reconstruction of Nassau Avenue and Monitor Street (Greenpoint)
- the other “main” street in Greenpoint, I don’t walk on Nassau much but I am glad Greenpoint actually got more attention.
Improvements to Long Island City Queens Plaza – Phase I & II
- the intersections of Queen Plaza North, South, Northern Boulevard, Jackson Avenue are a complete mess if anyone ever driving pass there! Along with Vernon Boulevard and 21st Street they all needed some major changes and improvements because the area is no longer an industrial wasteland but filled with new condos and people! I am glad that this will be done~
Reconstruction of East Houston Street
- Houston Street around Broadway to 6th Ave is almost done with the reconstruction (much nicer BTW), so it makes sense that Eastern portion of the street will be next~
Reconstruction of College Point / 32nd Avenue
- now College Point was my old neighborhood, although I no longer live there, but it’s awesome to see this isolated neighborhood get a piece of the money!
Now all we need is Albany to pass something to help MTA starve off the drastic service cuts and fare hike!!!
