The Story of Martha
Novels based on TV series are usually not what I would read cos no matter how good they are, they usually not consider to be really part of the TV series’ timeline or reality. Most of the time it might contradict with the storyline if the series is on-going. However, I come across this book in the store – Doctor Who: The Story of Martha. I wasn’t gonna pick it up, especially Doctor Who is still an on-going series that what ever happened in this book, the chances that the TV series will contradict and invalidate the storyline is pretty high. But then I read the description and I realized this story might actually worth a read because it sets at the one single year labeled “the year that never was” in the finale episode of the third series of the new Doctor Who. It was during the time when the Master captured the Doctor and enslaved the entire humanity, Martha Jones travel the world to spread the word and truth of the Doctor. What Martha went through during that entire year, what she experienced was never shown on screen, it was only mentioned through her exchanges with Tom Milligan that we know of her traveling through the world and the burning of Japan. Unfortunately no details was provided, and when the Doctor regained his power and reverse the year back there was nothing left of Martha’s journey because it never happened. This book tried to fill in that gap, and it was a good read, it shows us the journey of Martha but also some adventures of the Doctor and her that wasn’t showed on screen. The writing captured the personalities of the Doctor and Martha nicely too. I can see David Tennant acted out those stories and spoke those lines when I was reading. And because of this timeline gap that was presented in that episode, the plots in this book will probably not be invalidate – which increases the feeling of authenticity instead of feeling like reading about lies like many other TV series tie-in novels.
