Wasted Concept
Inkheart is one of the few books that the movie version is actually better. It is not because the movie is really good, it is because the movie gets the appeal of the concept, while the author of the book for some reason, don’t. The concept of the book is about someone who has the ability to read out characters from the books, bring them to live. The appeal as anyone can see, is characters from many books making a “guest appearance” here and how they affect the story. It’s the best concept to have a crossover type of story! However, for whatever reason, the author did not really utilize this as much as she could. Actually she did barely minimum and wasted this awesome concept. Of all the characters that can be read out and interact with the characters in Inkheart, we got someone that was nameless from One Thousand and One Arabian Night, Tinkerbell from Peter Pan, and a little toy soldier! Other than Farid, who might as well be a new character since he’s nameless in the original book he was in, None of the characters that got read out has much impact in the story.
Maybe it’s because of copyright reason which would be really a shame, or just the author herself didn’t want to put other people’s characters into the story. But it’s just such a waste! In the movie, characters and things got read out actually play a role in the story, the twister in the Wizard of Oz got read out and help the escape, flying monkey and all kind of creatures were all helping out in the last battle. They are not used too frequently to overshadowed the main story, but they have an impact, unlike in the book where they almost have no role in how the story play out whatsoever.
So yeah, I was disappointed, oh well, moving on to the next book on my list…
