Monsters vs Aliens
Sometimes the overly famous voice talents could overshadow an enjoyable animated movie. Such is the case for Monsters vs. Aliens. It’s still an enjoyable cute movie, but I found myself very conscious of the voices behind the characters. Maybe because this time around I know some of the voices way too well? For example, the character Susan, the whole time I was like, Reese Witherspoon! Stop sounding like this is one of your romantic comedies! Or Paul Rudd, as the jerk Derek, who sounded like his other jerky characters in other movies. Or Stephen Colbert as the President, saying political stuff and being an idiot. Or Hugh Laurie, still a Doctor even outside of Princton, NJ, even if he’s a cockroach! I guess my point is, the way they cast the voice behind the character, they just too closely resemble of the actors’ usual roles, and it makes it hard to focus in this animated world because the characters on the screen somehow reminded you the real actors behind that and it becomes very distracting. I never have that problem with other animated features, I don’t think of Tom Hanks when I see Woody in Toy Story, I don’t see Mike Meyers when I see Shrek, but for this movie though, the voices totally distracted me a bit. It’s still a funny movie though, Seth Rogen’s Bob and Rainn Wilson’s alien are hilarious. There’s even surprise guest voices like Amy Poehler as the computer and Renee Zellweger and John Krasinski! The story is pretty much your standard “a bunch of misfits got put together to save the world” plot. No big moral or theme here, which is fine, and it’s definitely left the possibility open for sequel. My problem with the plot is how few monsters are in that facility…I was expecting more than just a those 4 so-called monsters and a supersized girl! It just seems very “Hellboy team” to me…anyway, it’s a fun kids movie, that’s all i can say~
