Goodbye J.D.

scrubs_season8Scrubs’ finale is the most unusual for a comedy, there were more heart felt emotional moments than any laugh out loud gags or physical comedy that dominated the show for a few seasons.  It was very mature and doesn’t even go for those big happy ending that most series finale goes for.  Heck, even the main romance in the show – J.D. and Elliot – wasn’t the focus of the episode! J.D.’s inner monologue at the end of the episode, as always, makes you think about your own life. People grow, people change, people leaves, but the world still goes on everyday.  As Dr. Cox said, “It’s just a day,” even if this is the last day of an 8 years show.

The episode deals with the fall out of J.D.’s life-changing decision of moving closer to his son and take up a job in another hospital as a result.  Elliot was so mature that she has no problem with it and even sneak moved in with J.D. at his new place.  The ones with the problem with it seems to be Turk and Dr. Cox.  And to that is the main focus of the show. Their friendship, their mentorship and the uncertainty of the future.  J.D., of course, want to make his last day most memorable, but just like all of us who changed jobs know that, it rarely is memorable.  And you still have works to do even if it’s your last day – J.D.’s case of Huntington’s Disease patients is just that – and this last guest star of the show –  Josh Cooke, is one of my favorite adorkable guy on TV (last seen on Dollhouse in a flashback as Echo’s boyfriend before Echo is a doll).  I was very glad~~

Another unusual element is that there’s no big resolution to wrap up the storylines, everything seems to go for the uncertain future route – no matter if it’s Kelso becoming a traveling doctor and working again, Elliot and J.D. – will they get married?, J.D.’s relationship with Turk and Cox – will they stay in touch or drift apart?, or even the Janitor’s real name – is it really real?  Everything is a maybe and could be scenarios, all displayed in the projected film montage in J.D.’s head at the back of the “Goodbye J.D.” sign.

The big scene of almost every characters ever appeared on the show all lined up at the hallway, dead or alive, is emotional, but also showed how brilliant Bill Lawrence is! it’s yet another fantasy in J.D.’s head, so it’s not those trivial goodbye scenes in other finales~ I was sad that Franklin the lab technician (Hiro in Heroes), gift shop girl (Chuck’s sister in Chuck) couldn’t make an appearance because NBC was being childish~  It would have been perfect if they were in that scene as well, as well as Brendan Fraser, who delivered one of the best performance in the early days of the show, Michael J. Fox, Heather Graham, Molly Shannon, etc are all the guest stars that made a bigger impact in terms of the story.

As J.D. walked out alone into the uncertain future, it reminded me of another finale that was similar, although not as well done but still powerful – Ally McBeal.  She was also walking out alone into an unknown future, with people in her life behind her, dead or alive, wishing her goodbye.  Maybe it’s just me, this kind of finale makes way more impact to me than the happily ever after togetherness ending of Friends and Will & Grace.  In any case, Scrubs was one of the best comedy that has heart and the pioneer of the single camera half hour comedy style aka 30 Rock and the Office.  I will surely miss it.

Goodbye J.D.!

P.S. I know there’s rumor that this is not the end, but even if it’s not, the major characters won’t be back so is the creator, whatever that might come back next season is not the Scrubs that we know~
