twitter-wallpaperIt’s been two years since I have been using Twitter and now the mainstream finally discover it.  And I thought I was late to the game! Most people are still confuse of what exactly Twitter is and what is the use of it.  Most people are even downright rejective of it, the most used reasoning was “I don’t need to broadcast what i am doing every minute to the world!”  I think the misconception come directly from that tag line on Twitter “What Are You Doing?”  It is completely misleading on what purpose this micro-blogging has and how it fit into our communication system.  I think the more appropriated tag line would be “What are you thinking?” because what Twitter allows you to do is to share your thought.  Not in an one page essay kind of thought but some short, sometimes cutsy, sometimes smart-ass remarks that you would like to share.  I mean some idea that you just think of but it’s not immediate enough to call up your friends to tell them, nor it’s important enough to write a big email about it.  Firing up the IM would also be an overkill.  This is what Twitter comes in, it sits right in the middle of the hierarchy of communication mode between letter -> email -> IM -> phone!  You could share a thought, or a joke that you just made up with Twitter, and in most cases you are not sharing about what you are doing at any given boring moment of your life!  The only exceptions are when you are in some really cool concert or met a celebrity!

Oh and BTW, people don’t use the Twitter website, they have clients for your desktop, for your phone.  For me I uses Twitterrific and Tweetie.  Both have clients for desktop and the phone.  It’s funny though while I was moving back to use Twitterrific on my iPhone, on the desktop I moved away from it and switch to Tweetie.  Twitterrific was a pioneer, one of the first app for Twitter on both the desktop and on iPhone.  It was famous for being simple and easy to use.  However, soon afterward it becomes too simple with not enough features when compared to the other newer apps that came along on both platforms.  I tried quite a few Twitter clients on the iPhone and settled on TwitterFon, but once Twitterrific release version 2 of its app with powerful redesigned features.  I switched back immediately.  First of all the dark look of Twitterrific is sexy and it’s many functions from rivals all the other newer apps.  The only omission I can think of is the ability to see your friend’s followers and who they are following.  I suspect it’s just a matter of time before they add that feature in.

As for the desktop, I switched away from Twitterrific to Tweetie once Tweetie released its desktop client.  It looks simple with only four icons on the sidebar: timeline, mentions, direct messages and search, but it is powerful enough to handle all the functions of Twitter, not only that, it even support video tweet using your mac’s isight!  Of course all the standard shorten URL services and image service are supported as well.  I am not going to go through every features here, just like I didn’t mention much about the iPhone apps, the best way is to just download and use them yourself because they are all free (ad-supported, but there is also a paid version)~
