X-Men Oirgins: Wolverine

wolverineWolverine was never my favorite X-Men character, but you can’t deny that he is intriguing and a favorite by many others.  Hugh Jackman’s version in all 3 X-Men movies is even charming as well.  So what about this Origin movie of Wolverine? I am disappointed just by the concern itself, i mean, if you take away the mystery behind the character, what’s the fun of it? Not to mention his origin isn’t as intriguing once you found out the details!  Another disappointment of the movie, it gotta be Ryan Reynolds.  Don’t get me wrong, he is great and the bright spot in the movie, but the way they mess up his pretty face and make him all creepy in the end? Yeah, I am not gonna see your future spin-off movie of Deathproof if he looks like a freaking frankenstein! Can’t you keep him the way he was at the beginning of this movie? handsome, funny and awesome kung fu sword skill?

The character Wolverine was so special because of his anger and how he try so hard to understand who he was when he just couldn’t remember anything, not to mention the painful idea of someone put indestructible metal in him.  He needs to know why.  This movie showed us that he was passionate and kind and not an animal.  Also it showed us that he was fully aware of the procedure that was being done to him.  Granted he was in a way, still got trick into volunteering, but once we find out the reason and the truth was kind lame like this, all I can think of is that you are so ruining this character! There is no reason to spell everything out~ Leave some mystery!

Another problem of the movie is, of course the messing up of timeline, which is the first time since the first 3 X-Men movie already did that (although with good reasons).  Still, for someone who watched the X-Men cartoon as a kid back in the 90s, the arrangement of all these characters in different timeframe is just annoying – Gambit is an adult when Scott is a kid? and when Scott grow up then Rogue is a kid?

Anyhow, it’s still an okay summer popcorn movie, good action and Hugh is as charming as before – it’s been 8 years and he, just like his character – never seems to get old! It’s also exciting to see Gambit finally show up on screen, not to mention Liev Schreiber’s Sabretooth is probably the best version ever!
