Buying the new iPhone
I did not plan to buy the new iPhone 3GS on launch day. I know I will buy it at some point, but my plan was never the first day. Cos even if I am a super fanboy, I ain’t gonna be waiting in line in the rain 7 am in the morning! But as it turns out, even though I didn’t wait in line in the morning, I did however, wait in line for it at late night!!
The turning point was when my friend show me his brand new iPhone 3GS to me during lunch. Once I touched and played around with it, all my previous hesitation and reasoning for not buying it on launch day just melted away! And I did have a ton of reasoning just like I usually do: how I don’t want to be up early, how I don’t want to appeared to be some crazed fans, how I should give my wallet a cool off period before making a big purchase, how I should wait for people’s reviews, how the rumored of up to 2 days activation scares me, how I don’t have time to wait in line this particular day, how I should order a case first, etc etc etc. But once I have my friend’s iPhone on my hands, once I played around the cool features and how snappier it felt than my old first-gen iPhone. All those reasoning were replaced by a strong desire of “I have to have it now!!!!”
The schedule of the day was still crazy because obvious I need to finish the days work, couldn’t take off. And after work I have to head to my parents, so by the time I was all done with those and head back home. It was after 9pm already. I changed and head back out because even though all the other Apple Stores and ATT stores, and Bestbuy were closed by that time, one remain open – the 5th Ave Apple Store! It opens 24/7! I already did my online reservation earlier during the day, so I was thinking it’s already so late at night (by the time I get there was 10:15pm), I should get it without wait. I was wrong, there was still a huge line outside the store at 10:15 pm!!!!!! It actually wasn’t that bad. I estimated there was about 40 people before me and growing! (that’s just the line that made online reservation, there was also a much quicker line for pre-order and another much slower line or on-the-fly just walk-ins)
I waited outside for about 45 mins before I was let inside the store, and there’s another much shorter line there, about 18 people. But the line ran quick since from what I can see, there’s at least 100 employees working in the Cube! The store wasn’t as crowded like regularly because of the crowd-control, but still an hour before midnight and this place was still buzzing with people!! Found me another store in the United States that has this happen? 15 mins on the line then it was my turn!! My personal shopper was a young Taiwanese guy who is amazing and totally awesome! He’s about my height, thick black hair with black frame glasses. I have the biggest crush on him after 20 mins of this shopping experience! Seriously it felt like a mini date! lol~ maybe I haven’t meet any new guy at all, but man did we trade our stories from our background to our likes, and we share the same gadget history from Powerbook and the first-gen iPhone, our love for Sony cameras even if we both know Cannon’s picture quality is better, but we still end up buying Sony’s cam. We talked about our work and the experience with meeting important big name people. I mean I know the Apple store staffs are friendly, and trust me I know, I have spend way too much time in the Apple Stores in the past couple of years and shopped there countless times, but he is the most talkative and cool guy that I completely clicked with him! At the end of the shopping process his handheld crashed (it’s a PocketPC! ha!) So instead of letting me wait, he took me to the little side office in the back area. I was totally thrilled cos I doubt that many customers have been inside!! By the time it’s all done I didn’t want to leave!!! Gush, srsly! huge crush!!
So yeah, here’s to the coolest guy I met and the best shopping experience with Apple, and of course, my brand new iPhone!!
