Sea of Monsters

PercySeamonstersFirst in a series set up the background and the main characters.  It give you a nice adventure story where at the end the good defeated evil.  The second chapter in a series usually give you way much more depth because this time around you realize the evil come back stronger and it has long term plans.  You also would realize the main character is center to the plot of the evil, that’s why he wasn’t killed.  Plus there will always be some kind of a prophecy about the future!  The second book of Percy Jackson and the Olympians titled the Sea of Monsters follow a similar path.  It brings a lot more depth to the story because we found out that the Titan has a plan, it also fresh out some other characters such as Clarisse and introduce other characters like the Cyclop Tyson that might be important in the future.  I love that the story give us an unlikely shared experience and bond between Clarisse and our main heroes.  She was just a typical bully character in the first book, this time around it show us more about her and how she could actually be important in the series.

One element I like about the series is how it keep on updating the Greek Mythology to the modern world.  It’s so much fun to see all these characters in myth adapted to modern life! And seems like each book one major god shape the course of action in the book.  Last book we met Ares the god of war, this time around it’s Hermes and his gadgets.  Not only that, this time around we also get to see the teacher Chiron spring into action with his centaur clans! that’s always a sight to be seen! Of course, nothing compares to the twist in the end that is such a game changer.  It changes everything! Oh I can’t wait to get on to the next book!
