The Temperamentals
It’s quite appropriated to watch a play concerning a hidden history of the first gay rights organization before Stonewall on the Pride weekend. Finding out about the Temperamentals is a result of Twitter – I was following the adorable and hilarious Michael Urie of Ugly Betty fame. He tweeted about the play a lot, since he’s in it! And he’s also so nice to his fans that he tweeted discount code for the tickets as well. After reading about what the play is about, I figure, why not? I haven’t really been to any plays, maybe one that I could remember. I didn’t expect much other than seeing Michael and give some support but it was a pleasant surprise for me because the play is really good!
The play is touching and yet informative because it’s showing a piece of history that rarely anyone knows about. Seeing how the gays live in the 50s make us treasures the mostly trouble-free lives we have. The center romance between Harry Hay and Rudi Gernreich is emotional and honest. It’s painful to see how they struggle with personal and professional lives while organizing a gay rights group in the 50s. For people who are lucky enough to not have that difficult experience like me could still feel very much connected because we know it could happen, heck, it is still happening in other parts of the country and the world.
Michael Urie and the four other actors are amazing in it. I was incredible impressed at how a bare stage with just chairs and 5 actors can tell such a rich story. The theater is small with audience on both sides and yet they are so effective when using the space. There’s even one church group scene where the audience was somehow involved (I wish I was sitting by the aisle in the front! I could have held Michael’s hand!!) In sum, this is one of those little off Broadway plays that people usually missed but really should support, plus going to a play is an experience that we should all have at least once.
P.S. of course I am always amused that whatever I am watching, the main character’s name is Harry. I can’t help but be confused sometimes because people keep calling my name! lol
