Thoughts on WWDC Keynote part 2
iPhone 3GS. A product i will surely buy, even if I m not loving the name yet. I bought my first-gen iPhone two August ago. It is time for a new one! The better camera and video capture function of the iPhone 3GS has been rumored for a long time so it’s not really a surprise, nevertheless it would be very welcome to have a better camera on the iPhone cos I don’t always bring my own camera with me. The most surprising feature is the voice control. It’s not your regular voice dialing, it’s one step further where you control your iPod functions as well! Ask it to play a song by a certain artist, ask it to play a playlist, ask it to play songs similar to the one u are playing! i mean it just seems so amazing that you could do that! Doesn’t it feels a bit futuristic like in some sci-fi film wher you give voice command to the computer?
Another big feature that at first I didn’t think about but was surprised at the usuage was the compass. It is used to reorient the maps on the phone to match the direction you are facing! that’s definitely useful for people who has no sense of directions! The biggest new feature and the most useful one is the one that’s invisible – the power and speed increase within the iPhone! Even if Apple is not publizing what’s inside, if the tech pundit and bloggers are correct, then inside the RAM should be double that what it used to be and with a faster processor, the support for Open GL ES 2.0 and the ability to get on 7.2 mbps HSPDA, the operation of everything from opening app to using the web to play console quality games will be much improved.
Now jumping from EDGE to 3G should still feel faster even if people said the current ATT 3G is slow, and jumping from 8GB to 32GB space is gonna be an incredible improvement for me to manage my media on the go~ Coupled that with a beefed up battery life and an oleophobic coating screen (it should be more oil repellent?), what’s not to love?
One of the biggest complaint during WWDC was AT&T, since two features in iPhone – MMS and tethering were supposed at launch by many carriers around the world, except our own AT&T. People already hate the fact that their 3G speed is slow, coverage area isn’t great and quality isn’t good. Now add these two factors onto it. The crowd was mad. I forgot where I read it but this sentence captured the mood the best, “in an Apple event if you people hate you more than Microsoft, then you are in big trouble!” And that’s not it because then there’s the whole upgrade price problem where if you got your iPhone in the past year – most iPhone 3G owner, then you are not qualified for the $199/299 price points. You need to pay more, like $399/499!!! Your contract has to be over 18 months to get the regular price! No matter how legit this situation is because of subsidy issue, when the crowd is already mad, and you ask them to pay 200 more? complete chaos!
Luckily for me, because I am 22 months into the contract, I can buy iPhone3GS and still have the same price point as the “new” customers of AT&T. Which means I don’t have to wait til August to get my new phone – but I am probably not gonna wait on line to buy it the first weekend though, i don’t really need to rush since there is the 3.0 OS upgrade to my iPhone on the same week anyway. Plus I am the kind of person who need the whole package decided and set first, which means I will need to find a case that I like first! I am incredibly picking as you can imagine, so it will need some time to figure out which coolest case I can get.
