Being Human

BeingHumanI just can’t get enough of British shows. Being Human is yet another sci-fi/fantasy show imported from the other side of the Atlantic. However, despite it’s unique setup, it failed to develop engaging plotlines with rich history like Doctor Who or Torchwood. The premise was simple and unique and almost comical: a vampire and a werewolf moved into a house, they didn’t know the house was haunted by a ghost. Now a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost living together as roommates, trying to live a normal life, trying to be human.

The setup really is an intriguing situation despite the comical effect, the history and the back story behind each “species” is alright, not the best that I heard of, but it’s okay~ The real problem is the situations the writers throw them into, as well as the character’s stupidity when handling the situations! Best example is that when the main characters escaped from the bad vampire’s headquarter, they just go straight home and just sit there and discuss! I mean even if the bad vampires need an invite to get in, doesn’t mean they are SO no in danger that they can sit around and have a cup of tea!!! How stupid can that be? and opening the door when you heard knocking under such circumstances? I have no sympathy for you to get stab in the heart as a result! Then there’s your standard one minute a character (the ghost!) can’t control her abilities, the next all of the sudden she can do whatever she want when she went to the big vampire’s headquarter!

Despite that, I do like some of the idea of the series, like the process of werewolf transformation is extremely painful and that the logical explanation of it about how all the human organs were shrinking to wolf size, the person was basically having an heart attack and at the same time, lung failure, liver failure etc etc. It is gruesome and cruel but fit the idea of the cursed creature.

Overall, an alright series that hopefully series 2 will be a bit smarter and address some of the shortcoming of the series while continue to develop the mythology behind it.
