Death’s Daughter

DeathsdaughterThe only reason I got the book was because Amber Benson. Obviously I am curious to see how Tara from Buffy do in the literary world. Not to mention there was a book-signing by her in Midtown Comics, so I got her signature and had a brief chat with her so it was pretty cool. Now the book itself is filled with interesting concepts and plots and in general a good story, but the problem is, the main character Calliope is so unsympathetic that it’s impossible for me to form an emotional bond with her. It’s so much so that I don’t care what happens to her. She’s too whiny and definitely shallow to the bone. She is simply not a likeable character and therefore, no matter how many interesting plots you throw into the story, with a lead like that, it’s hard to like the book.

Now the interesting part of the book is how Amber mix different myths together and created a very intriguing world. I especially like the idea of how gods will be after they no longer has followers and faded into history. Death as a corporation and a family business are also extremely interesting. All of that shows that Amber is a capable writer, but hopefully next time she can write a more sympathetic main character, seriously Calliope whines more than Harry in Book 5 of Harry Potter (my least favorite of the entire series), and that’s saying something~
