Regina Spektor@Radio City

Yesterday I went to see Regina Spektor’s concert the third time this year, but unlike the previous two times, this is a real paid, full length concert at Radio City Music Hall.  Before the concert, I did worry about if I will get tired of her shows after two times.  But all worries faded away when she started to sing.  She is as lovely as ever and with a much richer rundown given the added time compared to the free shows at Apple or B&N, there were definitely pleasant surprises.

I am getting ahead of  myself, let’s start with the opening act first.  The opening act for the show is Jupiter One, a local Brooklyn indie rock band led by K Ishibashi and Zac Colwell.  Now correct me if I am wrong, but I believe K Ishibashi is, aside from being the opening act, one of Regina’s musicians who accompany her on every performance on stage or on TV shows.  Because of the distance between my seat and the stage, it’s just hard to tell, so I spent the whole time wondering if they are the same person!

During the first half of the show, Regina performed her new materials from the new album.  Some of the stand outs from the album like, Eet, Blue Lips, Folding Chair and Laughing With I had heard her sang them live twice, but I was so glad that she was able to perform some other gems in the record, like the fun and playful Dance Anthem of the 80′s, the sad but hopeful One More Time with Feeling, the eery Machine and the thoughtful Two Birds.  With a brief instrumental snippet of November Rain, she started to perform some of the old favorites and some non-studio album materials.  Old favorites like On the Radio, That Time, Apres Moi and Poor Little Rich Boy.  One of my big surprise of the night was hearing her perform The Call – the theme of the second Narnia movie.  It is one of my favorite song that I thought deserves a lot more attention than the failed movie warranted.

As for the non-studio album materials, those are the really playful ones that showcased her folksy and out there type of music where she’s almost like talking to you instead of singing, there was the very silly – Silly Eye Color Generalizations and Bobbing For Apples, the emotional Ink Stains, and the last song during encore – Love Ur A Whore – totally not what I expected to be a last song material!! The rest of the encore was not one, not two, but three of everyone’s favorites – Samson, Us, and Fidelity!

I can never get it how a shy little girl like her that has such a magnificent powerful voice! And she’s so talented, not just as a pianist but she showed her guitar skills as well.  I absolutely adore her!!

A few words for the pictures: this time around I finally brought my camera, and the new one too that can take better pictures in the dark! The problem is my seat was just too far even with a 4X zoom, so despite some cool pictures, I am “borrowing” other closeup shots from other blogs here, here and oh, even the setlist too!
