Astroboy
It’s always scary to watch a remake or re-imagination or a film adaptation of something that you adored back when you were a kid. Going into Astroboy is the same, especially I wasn’t very used to the 3D look of Astroboy. The 2D old comic look of Astroboy burned deep within my memory. Luckily the new film give new life into the story, and the 3D looks has enough resemblance of the old look that by the middle of the movie you would be used to the new look and doesn’t feel weird about it anymore.
I especially like the beginning setup that was told in 2D cartoon. Metrocity is a castle in the sky that escape the pollution on the ground, and yet the citizen keep on adding more garbage to the ground by desposing their trash and used robots. It has a different take of the same environmental issue in Wall-E, but unfortunately later on it forgot about the issue by focusing on the hero aspect of it. I can’t argue with that decision because Astroboy is no Wall-E, it’s make to do all those heroic stuff because of its super powers. But if it can address the issue in the end it would have been better.
Other than that, I like the movie, it’s positive, it’s colorful. The animation is smooth and the character designs not only pay homage to the classic but successfully update them to the new century. There’s enough heart in it to make you like the characters. There’s not enough robot movies in hollywood where robots are all evil, so we need more of this type of positive movies.
