Magic Wand

Wand Universal Remote
Remember when Steve Jobs unveiled the AppleTV, there’s one thing that he was very proud of is how simple the remote control was? he said we have 6 buttons, compared to 80 somewhat button on other companies remote control. I never imagined someone would make a remote control that has no button – not counting iPhone’s various software remotes – and in such an awesome package – The Kymera Wand Universal Remote Control!!! It is essentially an infrared remote control with accelerometer built-in but in the shape of a wand! Yes you heard it right, a wand, like the ones that Harry Potter has! You wave it around using different gesture to control your TV’s on and off, volume, changing channels, 13 different gestures for you to program their functions.
I was pretty much speechless and then jumped up and down when I heard about such a product! What an intriguing concept and implementation for an accelerometer product! Not to mention the geek factor is off the roof! We all know Harry loves magic and technology! So this is like perfect, except that I don’t have a TV to work with a remote, but I can use it to control a Mac (hopefully!) I also think of other possibilities, like use it to play Harry Potter games – I remember the game Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix game on Wii use the Wiimote in a very similiar way, except that the Wiimote look nothing like a real wand. If only the Kymera wand can talk to the Wii or other game consoles, imagine how fun if it got tie-in with games!
A famous quote by Arthur C. Clarke also come to my mind when I was thinking about this product. “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” The quote recently made an appearance in Richard Kelly’s new movie The Box. But I find it even more appliable here. Imagine someone dress in robe and with a wizard hat and have this wand. Add a few stragetically placed hardwares that can be control by this wand. Step back in time in a few centuries and what do you got? a real wizard! No one back in the days would suspect a thing! And why stop at that, imagine a magic mirror could just be a dual layer LED screen with a camera behind it. Tom Riddle’s diary could just be a touchscreen E-ink device. Technology we have nowadays are really something~ I am really tempted to get this wand even if I don’t really need it! :p
