My Favorite Music of 2009 (1)

13 December 2009 225 views No Comment

2009 has quite a few great albums, especially from the returning artists’ sophomore or follow up albums.  I remember last year there were quite a few that I was excited to wait for the albums to come out but eventually got disappointed.  This year though, I was excited at quite a few albums from the beginning of the year up until this month.  Overall it’s a great year.  My rule of thumb for great album is that it got to have more than 5 songs on the albums that I really like.  It’s quite easy to have one hit song on an album, it’s also easy to have one song that caught my ear in the album, but to have more than 5 songs that I like in one single album is not that easy.  Here are my top 10 favorite albums for the year:

Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future – The Bird and the Bee

Inara George has one of the most beautiful voice in the industry, her solo effort “Fools in Love” in Grey’s Anatomy’s soundtrack gave me chills.  When she’s in a group, the music become a bit more playful and fun.  Their debut album was great back in 2007 and in last year all they did were EPs but still they were all excellent.  Therefore when it come to a full length sophomore album, my expectation was sky high.  When the album came out it didn’t disappoint.  The sound is even more playful than before (just look at the title!), I really dig their electro-pop with a bit of 60s in them, it’s such a unique mix. The album also included a few hits from the previous EPs as well.

Recommended: Love Letter to Japan, Ray Gun, My Love, You’re a Cad, Lifespan of a Fly

The Fray – The Fray

Another sophomore album, but the stake for this band is much higher, their debut album “How to Save a Life” back in 2005 was fantastic and I wasn’t the only one who loved it, million others do.   I loved the two singles “Over my Head (Cable Car)” and “How to Save a Life”.  That Album was one of my most played album in iTunes, so I was extremely worried that this sophomore album can not live up to my expectation.  Luckily the album is as delightful as the first one. The Fray is a band that uses piano to the best effect.  The intro to “You Found Me” and “Never Say Never” are so simple and yet it just touches you.  I especially loved the album art as well.

Recommended: You Found Me, Never Say Never, Absolute, Where the Story Ends, Ungodly Hour, Happiness

All I Ever Wanted – Kelly Clarkson

According to the play count in my iTunes, Kelly Clarkson is my most played American artist.  She’s the only American Idol I cared about.  She is just the right kind of pop, the kind that is about singing, not about selling body or crazy fashion.  I loved her first two albums and even the third one when her style turned a bit more dark and more rock.  In this fourth album, her song choice and style were very much similar to her successful second album.  I don’t think anyone was complaining because the formula works.  I love her playful songs like “My Life Would Suck Without You”, I also like her ballads like “Cry”.  But the songs I liked the most in this album are the ones that were produced by OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder – “Already Gone”,”Save You”, and “Impossible”.

Recommended: My Life Would Suck Without You, I Do Not Hook Up, Cry, All I Ever Wanted, Already Gone, Save You
