My Favorite Music of 2009 (3)
Continue from the last post, here are the rest of my top 10 albums of 2009:
Waking Up – OneRepublic
OneRepublic has a somewhat distinctive sound among all the bands. There’s a rhythm in their music, , something that without listening to the voice track, you would know it’s their music. Their debut album has a single that was remix by Timberland that really bring that rhythm front and center, and that was, as we all know, their smash hit “Apologize”. This time around, they have another collaboration with Timberland, which resulted in the track “Marchin On,” but the rest of the album is just as good! The first single “All the Right Moves” has powerful sound, “Secrets,” “Everybody Loves Me,” “Good Life” are all as memorable as the songs in the last album.
Recommended: All the Right Moves, Secrets, Everybody Loves Me, Marchin On, Good Life.
The Fame Monster – Lady Gaga
Technically not a full album but a EP, but given that it has 8 new tracks, it’s almost an album. Lady Gaga’s follow up to last year’s phenomenally popular album “The Fame.” I still haven’t fully embrace her unlike the entire gay population. To me her outrageous fashions just put me off a little. Seriously every time I see her perform I was like, are you kidding me with this?? Nevertheless you can’t deny that her music just stick in your head like no others! Feature track “Bad Romance” makes me laugh every time with its non-lyric ooh la las or roma roma, but the song is like a plague that no one can escape but to sing along!
Recommended: Bad Romance, Monster, Speechless, Telephone, Teeth
Glee: The Music Vol. 1 – Glee Cast
Yes the last one on the list is a soundtrack of the TV show Glee. I am always more receptive to musicals on TV then actual Broadway musicals, I have no idea why. However, there was one Broadway musical that I loved and that was Spring Awakening. The lead actress Lea Michele is the lead in Glee, so naturally, that connection hooked me into the show! The show made some very smart choices when it come to songs that they covered and it’s all on this soundtrack. I hope this show stays on the air long than most newer shows nowadays, cos they really have some great covers!
Recommended: Take a Bow, Taking Chances, Alone, No Air, Defying Gravity
Best New Artist:
Gary Go has the spot but since he’s featured in my top 10 albums, the spot now goes to Parachute. Their debut album “Losing Sleep” is narrowly left out of my top 10 but it’s still a fantastic album and I am looking forward to more great stuff from this new band! ”Under Control” is a fantastic song!
Running up: La Roux, Owl City
Best Come Back:
Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix – Phoenix
I used to like Phoenix’s first album years ago, but they kinda fall out of my favorite. However their latest album this year totally make me like them again! Listomania and 1901 are some of the best songs this year that makes you move!
Best Soundtrack:
(500) Days of Summer – One of the best movie of this year, in my opinion, has the greatest soundtrack of this year. It reintroduce us to the Smiths and Hall & Oates, it made us aware of the Temper Trap, it confirm that Regina Spektor is the greatest and it let us know that both the actress Zooey Deschanel and the French First Lady Carla Bruni can sing!
In sum, this is a satisfying year in music, I hope next year will be just as great!!
