My Favorite Music of 2009 (2)
Continue from the last post, here are the next few of my top 10 albums of 2009:

It’s Not Me, It’s You – Lily Allen
I did not have a good impression of Lily Allen when she first hit it big three years ago. Some of her comments just made her looks like she’s a bit of a brat, almost too obnoxious. Therefore I didn’t even listen to her debut album despite all the good reviews. Three years later when her sophomore album came out, I finally give it a try and listen to her music. To my surprise, I really like it, and I immediately found her first album to see what had I missed out. I noticed the subtle differences in her music style and even though there were great songs in her first album, I liked this sophomore album a lot more. My favorite song in the album is “22,” a song about growing older to the big 3-0, no longer young like 22. Even though the song is from a perspective of a girl, I can still feel that anxious “best year is behind me” fear. I was never the one who’s into sweet loving songs since they kinda makes me sad because I am such a failure in relationship, but I really dig the two sweet songs in the album – “Who’d Have Known” and “Chinese.”

Far – Regina Spektor
Regina is my second favorite American female artist after Kelly Clarkson, but lately she pretty much surpassed Kelly. She is ridiculously adorable! I went to her concert two years ago, but this year, I went to three of her concerts! yes, three! One in Apple Store, Soho, one in Union Square Barnes & Nobles and, a “real” concert in Radio City Music Hall! Her last album contributed a few of my most played songs in my iTunes, and this album continues her reign in my heart. People might not get her quirky lyrics, but I urge you to see her live, that’s the only way you can appreciate her sometimes weird songs.

Gary Go – Gary Go
A bloody brilliant new artist from across the pond, his cover of Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” is genius. His music is like a mix of James Blunt and Coldplay. A powerful new voice that is just captivating. I didn’t really know how he looks like until I went to Mika’s concert and he happened to be the opening act! And once I see what he looks like and his fashion style, I am in love! Not to mention during his performance, he uses his iPhone as an instrument to perform! Seriously, it was good!! So in sum, a cute guy who know who to dress, a great voice, and a techno geek, what else can I ask for?

The Boy Who Knew Too Much – Mika
Mika’s debut album was all camp and fun and happy, and yet the lyrics were actually pretty deep and meaning. That album was in my Top 5 of most played album of all time and I like every single songs in the album. Now that’s what I would call a tough act to follow. His sophomore album is surprisingly consistent in themes with his first album but yet you can sense the maturity in the music. His collaboration with Imogen Heap on the track “By the Time” is magical; ”I See You” makes me cry as much as “Happy Ending” in the last album. Mika never shy away from using his music to comment about controversy topics (“Touches You”), or remake some fable (“Lady Jane”, “Toy Boy”). His music is like some healthy food that uses a layer of candy coating as a disguise!
