Momento and Ommwriter
Momento is a diary app on the iPhone. It is an app that makes me love my iPhone even more, and I didn’t think it is possible. One of the most gorgeous and elegant app out there. I can’t believe how pretty this is. There is a million note taking app out there, in fact the iPhone comes with one. It’s true that an app that has text input can serve the function of a diary because all you are doing is recording a memory via text, but the virtual working environment need to inspire you to write in the first place! Momento mimcs an actual diary, from the passcode that serve as a lock, to the notebook paper pages with spine and lines and dotted lines to separate your entries, to the dark wood background that is like an old fashioned desk. The details in this app is incredible! Then there are the digital age enhance to the diary experience, from searching to calendar view and day view, to tagging and star rating to the ability to insert pictures, to the most unique feature of all: the ability to import from your social networking services: Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and Last.fm. It imports your entries at these services and put them right into your diary! Right from the start you don’t even have to type in anything you would already have a diary full of moments and things that you said in the past!
Of course a product like this is not for everyone, if you never keep a diary before, or equally if you shares everything with the world on your blogs, facebook and twitter already. You probably don’t need a private space like Momento. For me, the last few years with my blog and facebook and such. I am comfortable to share many of my thoughts out to the world. But there are always topics that I self-censored myself, like I never talked about work in my blog because that would be stupid, or how I feel about certain people, most of the time I have to avoid the names, or sometimes, just some more depressing thoughts I had and they won’t be going to the blog because I was afraid it might make my friends worried. And increasingly since last month, I feel like I need a private space just to express myself without worrying the consequence. Momento give me that space. A grogeous and elegant space to be alone with.
Speaking of writing, I know I am not a good writer at all, as you can see from this blog that fills with horrible grammar and spelling error and run-on sentences. But I recognize the value of a good writing environment. Many blog tools or even your desktop has too much distraction going on. There is this app on the Mac called Ommwriter. It is a full screen writing app that is simple and without much feature at all, but the main feature is that it is bare with almost nothing but a pretty scenry wallpaper and relaxing background music. All you can do is to write because it blank out all menubar, dock, notification, options and preferences. I find myself more concentrate and idea flow better in such a relaxing environment. If this app can help a crappy writer like me, I am sure it can do tremendous good to a serious and productive writer, so give Ommwriter a try as well. (Ommwriter is free anyway)
Both Momento and Ommwriter are in their infancy, the developers promise a lot more features to come, I have high hopes for them, It is because apps like these that make Mac and iPhone superior.
