Goodbye Betty

Betty and Marc, two of my favorite in the show

I am going to miss Ugly Betty.  Yes it did lost its way a bit in its 2rd and 3rd season.  The plot lines were getting ridiculous – UB always has over the top plots, but it was getting completely outrageous, especially the whole Alexis and then the stolen sperm turn heir storyline.  However, somewhere in the 3rd season it found its footing in New York and the storyline was getting better, and you can really see the growth for many of the characters.  This last season I just think the show finally found its right balance between the loud out loud moment and the heart wrenching ones.  And then it ended.  It’s a shame because if it can maintain the creative momentum of 4th season, I have no question that the show has at least one more season with it.  Because the way it ended, especially the finale, you can just tell they were rushing to wrap up every storyline so much so that it’s like “oh we just tie this one up nicely, ok, next!”  And despite its effort to do so, there are still many loose ends that we will probably never get answers to.  But I have to say they still did a great job and end the show in an upbeat note that I liked a lot.

Things I like:

How they showed Justin’s come out storyline in such a classy and subtle way.  They could have easily go for the big Public Service Announcement style storytelling like so many shows with gay characters do, but they didn’t do that at all and it was the best moment of the show that they really should be proud of.

They bring back Henry, the so-called Betty’s true love, but used him in a way not to show a happy cliche ending!  They didn’t caved to the pressure from the audience who just love Henry and Betty together.  It reminds me of the ending of Buffy where Angel is back and yet Buffy gave the cookie speech about how she’s still finding herself and not ready yet.  Betty and Henry is like that, and their story is still open-ended.  I really like that.

Same with the whole Daniel falling for Betty story line in the very end.  They didn’t choose the original telenovela ending of Daniel and Betty together, just simply showing it could be one of the many possibility that Betty will end up with.  It is another smart and classy decision.

The show ends with Betty working in London with the Title “Ugly” fading away, leaving just “Betty.”  It was a perfect ending and a personal favorite because I just love London and I am incredible happy to see one of my favorite character end up there.

Goodbye Betty, I’ll miss you.
