The Eleventh Doctor at the Eleventh Hour

The wait is finally over, a brand new Doctor crashing out of the sky into our backyard. We all have our doubt about how this younger hipster-ish eccentric new Doctor would work and from the moment he climb out of the box, er, the Police Box we all know and love, he own the role! David Tennant is still my favorite Doctor, but yet Matt Smith somehow fit right into the role. I thought I need at least a few episode to get used to him, so it’s a pleasant surprise!

The new showrunner Steven Moffat lifted many familiar elements from the episodes he wrote in the last 4 years. From meeting a small girl and promise to return in 5 minutes but actually in years, to the creature that you can only see through the corner of your eyes. Even if it’s re-used idea, once they got throw into a different situation, the chemistry is very different, and good difference! First of all, Amy Pond is literally a companion that has been waiting for the Doctor for her whole life! Unlike Rose and Martha who happens to be there, or Donna who waited for two years or so after the Christmas episode to join up the Doctor. Then there’s the creature that you can only see through the corner of your eyes, the eel, well, it’s a bit weird, but the creepy level definitely is there when it’s in a human form that can never talk through the right mouth. And speaking of Amy Pond, she’s fierce like Donna and yet secretive and strong, with a whole life of admiration toward the Doctor. She’s like the mixture of all three previous companion – Rose: young and love, Martha: strong and intelligent, Donna: fierce and brave. She may be the best yet.

As for the plot of the week, it’s a fantastic idea to throw the Doctor into a situation where he can’t depends on the TARDIS and the sonic screwdriver. And the Doctor still has plan after plan to defeat the threat! How awesome is that? We even get to see a little bit of how the Doctor’s mind works via stop motion camera effect! And then there’s the brand new TARDIS! The return of Doctor Who surely is gonna excited and cheer me up for the next 3 months!!
