Lobster Roll

Since the last time I blogged about food (which is last Fall – soo long ago!), there were quite a few obsessions come and gone – fast food pasta, the Meatball Shop, bubble tea, etc etc and the last two weeks comes yet another obsession – Lobster Roll!

It all started with the infamous Luke’s Lobster Bar started a food truck last week. I heard of Luke’s Lobster Bar for a while and I have yet made it to their storefront in East Village. (Which is odd because East Village is my stomping ground!) So when their food truck started rolling in midtown in various locations each day, I was determined to catch up and finally try their infamous Lobster Roll! During their first week, they parked in various locations in midtown, none of them ever close to my work, except one day when I was out, they parked it at Lexington Ave! I was upset obviously, but nothing I can do, it’s not like I can take a 2 hours lunch because I want to chase around a food truck! So over the weekend, I broke down and walked all the way to their East Village Storefront instead.

It is a tiny little store with a few high stools (it is called a bar after all!) with nautical theme decoration along the walls and a simple menu with 3 choices of rolls – lobster, crab and shrimp; various combo between the 3; soups and drinks. You can have it to go, to walk, or eat here. They allow half a roll with half price, so I ordered a half lobster and half crab roll. I also ordered lobster bisque. The roll comes with, as you can see from the pictures, more lobster and crab meat than I can ever imagine! Granted $16 (for a full roll, so here is actually 8+ 5 since it’s half & half) is expensive, but imagine you order that much lobster in a real restaurant! How much would that cost you? Anyway, they have a really simple approach to it with just enough mayo, lemon butter and whatever secret spices with it, but nothing overcome the natural taste of the lobster and crab meat itself. The bun is soft but not too soft, just the right amount. It is a perfect little heaven for seafood lover like me! And as for the lobster bisque? Well well, the lobster meat chunks in the soup are bigger than the crackers that come with the soup! It is so good that it completely ruined Hale & Hearty’s lobster bisque or any other places’ lobster bisque for me!!

Then this week, while trying to find out if Luke’s Lobster truck is anywhere nears my work, I found out that Luke’s actually has a competitor! There is actually another lobster roll place that has a food truck “rolling in the deep” as well! (Oh yes, I couldn’t resist putting that in!) The competitor is the Red Hook Lobster Pound, which as the name suggested, located in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Given the location, I would probably have a chance to try their food unless their truck comes to midtown. And somehow, maybe they know that I was dying to try their lobster roll, they did come to park on Lexington Ave today!

I rushed out to catch the truck once I found out the location from Twitter. Now there are a few differences between the roll from Red Hook Lobster Pound and Luke’s. Red Hook’s doesn’t allow half a roll, so you have to order the full roll. However, their lobster roll has two style to choose from – Maine or Connecticut. Maine style is the one that most people are familiar with, chilled lobster meat with mayo on it. Connecticut style has warm lobster meat with butter. Now that’s something I never heard of, so obviously, that’s the one I ordered! Their lobster roll has just as much lobster meat in it, with just the right amount of butter and some shredded lettuce and scallions on top, also pickle on the side. It is different than the lobster roll that I was used to, but equally tasteful!

As for which one’s lobster roll is better? I seriously can’t decide because they are both equally good! You have to try it yourself.
