I watched Where the Wild Things Are in the same weekend as the Box, even though the two are very different genres, both are adapted from very short stories (children’s or not). It’s good to compare how the two different approaches where the source material was too short to fill the entire length of a movie. In the Box Richard Kelly pretty much wrap up the original plot in about 20 mins and for the rest of the movie is all his imagination and has no trace of …

Before I get to the movie, I want to briefly talk about the short story that it was based on first. The short story titled Button, Button by Richard Matheson was a very short moral story that you can finish it in under 10 minutes. It is about a couple who received a locked box that contains a button and a note that tells them Mr. Steward will be visiting to explain. Indeed Mr. Steward showed up and give the wife an offer (husband was at work): …

It’s always scary to watch a remake or re-imagination or a film adaptation of something that you adored back when you were a kid. Going into Astroboy is the same, especially I wasn’t very used to the 3D look of Astroboy. The 2D old comic look of Astroboy burned deep within my memory. Luckily the new film give new life into the story, and the 3D looks has enough resemblance of the old look that by the middle of the movie you would be used to the …

Zombieland was an action comedy that is pure fun, and oh, it has zombies in it! The plot is pretty standard zombie flick – virus turn human into flesh-eating zombies, and now there’s only very few people left in this world.  It was only two months after the zombie apocalypse, but most places are already deserted.  Woody Harrelson find the perfect role to play here as a guy who find killing zombies as fun as sport, and his only passion is to find the remaining Twinkies on Earth! Jesse Eisenberg …

9 sets in a stunning post-apocalyptic world where all that’s left is deaths and destruction, well, and some tiny rag-dolls with numbers, and some deadly robotic beasts that are hunting them. The movie is incredible well-made with amazing details and style, and yet I found it too depressing to do a second viewing or recommend it to others. There are always films like that, so good and yet so depressing that you can’t even watch – Children of Men, I am looking at you! 9 is another example, …

Fame is a remake of a 1980 film of the same name. I didn’t see the original but I surely hope the original is better. It is about a group of students who went into a performing arts school and their journey through 4 years of studying there. This movie does have a few exciting musical numbers, but with abysmal script that every plot line is predictable and most characters are very one-dimensional, it’s hard to conjured up sympathy for any of them. To make the …

Newest trailer for New Moon, also, one that finally give me some confident that this might actually not be as problematic film adaptation than the first one!

The Cove is an action thriller about a covert mission to expose a tightly guarded secret of a quiet town in Japan. Oh, and it’s a documentary! The film really unravel like a spy thriller, even the people in the film joked about them being the team of Ocean’s Eleven. Well, except that their mission is not to pull off a heist, but to obtain footage of a brutal truth of the town of Taiji, Japan – a seemingly lovely town that adores whales and dolphins.
The truth is …

Simply put, Ponyo is magical. There is no other word to describe it. Miyazaki’s newest film might not have the depth and meaning of his last few films like the environment or the terror of wars, but it has in place is a sense of innocence, just like his classic My Neighbor Totoro. Ponyo is inspired by the classic, Hans Christian Andersen’s the Little Mermaid. Of course, Ponyo is purely Miyazaki style unlike the Disney’s take to the classic tale.
I am not even going to repeat …

I love movies with fantasy elements. Now when it’s done by a fame director, it’s obviously even better. Below are trailers for four movies by Terry Gilliam, Peter Jackson, Richard Kelly, Wes Anderson. I love all their previous films and I am extremely excited at these films! Then there are 3 other fantasy films that I found but I wasn’t familiar with the directors, nevertheless, they could be very good~
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus – Terry Gilliam, the one who bought you classics like Monthy Python, 12 …
