After finished reading Coraline, comparsion with the movie version is inevitable. I believe the movie adaptation made some smart decisions to improve on an already great story. Things such as the invention of the character Wybie so that there is someone else for Coraline to talk, the spying doll which gives the story an even more creepy element, the backstory of the landlord lady and her missing sister, and the fact that Coraline’s family just move in! Non of them are in the original story, but they …

Novels based on TV series are usually not what I would read cos no matter how good they are, they usually not consider to be really part of the TV series’ timeline or reality. Most of the time it might contradict with the storyline if the series is on-going. However, I come across this book in the store – Doctor Who: The Story of Martha. I wasn’t gonna pick it up, especially Doctor Who is still an on-going series that what ever happened in this book, the chances that the TV series …

Inkheart is one of the few books that the movie version is actually better. It is not because the movie is really good, it is because the movie gets the appeal of the concept, while the author of the book for some reason, don’t. The concept of the book is about someone who has the ability to read out characters from the books, bring them to live. The appeal as anyone can see, is characters from many books making a “guest appearance” here and how they affect the story. It’s …

Ever since Scott introduced me to Neil Gaiman, every time there’s a movie based on his work, I would definitely go see it. Coraline is one of them and I have to say it’s the best so far. Nei’s work is always dark, sometimes I wonder if him and Tim Burton are long lost brothers. Coraline is a stop-motion picture that has a dark story. The most famous stop-motion picture that has a dark story was coincidentally Tim Burton’s the Nightmare Before Christmas. Comparison is inevitable and I think Coraline won …

I ordered the limited edition of the Tales of Beedle the Bard like ages ago – seriously, it was like back at the days of my last job. Anyway, it arrived on December 4th, the day that I went to LA. It was sent to my friend’s house and after I come back, I still hadn’t have a chance to get the book because someone was being forgetful! I didn’t get it until the day of the Harry Potter Movie Marathon – a very fitting occasion to receive it, but it also …

It was just earlier this year that one of my favorite author passed away, now come the news yet another one has fallen. This time it’s the author of classics such as Jurassic Park, the Lost World, Congo, Sphere – author Michael Crichton. He died of cancer at the age of 66. I really liked his books in the 90s~ Most people would only remember the movie versions of them. But I can tell you they are merely an empty shell of their former self in …

City of Ember is about the last human settlement underground named Ember is about to collapse and two children’s mission to save their city by finding a way out.
The movie is based on a 2003 novel by Jeanne Duprau which I haven’t have a chance to read yet. I have favorable impression on the movie especially on the characters, but the movie itself seems incomplete. I am not sure if it’s because of the source material (it’s a series after all), it just seems to me that there is not much resolution. It’s …

While I think the final poster of Twilight looks horrible – Seriously Edward suppose to be the most handsome, not most creepy! the final trailer looks a lot better and actually looks like it gets the mood of the story right. I still question the way they sell the movie by focusing on the action – there’s not that much action in the book at all, it’s essentially a romance story! But hopefully they will make a decent adaptation of the book that could lead to the rest of the …

I was running down the heavily wore out staircase. The maintenance staff was trying to figure out which piece of the wailing fell out. I told Janet the piece that she has in her hand should go on the side. We chit-chat a bit and she mentioned the condition of the staircase will get worst when the security will station permanently on the staircase itself on the 3rd floor.
I walked down to the basement where the cafeteria is located. Many students were already there. I had an important news to …

This dream takes me straight into Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series, where the accident-prone Bella once again face another dangerous location – the Laundromat! I wasn’t sure why she would be in a Laundromat, given that her house would definitely have a washing machine. But here she is, putting all kind of clothes in the machine, no matter if they are light colors, dark colors, big or small. Then she poured the wrong amount of detergent which would result in a total destruction of all her clothes. To top it off, …
